Our Westfalia T4 was build in 1995 and was the last T4 with the 2.4l 5 cilinder diesel engine with a mechanical fuel pump . I guess the mechanics at the VW plant decided to make a statement by building the very best mechanical diesel engine in the history of Volkswagen. In the past 30 years almost every part of the van has been replaced or repaired except for the engine and the gearbox. ‘Durchrepariert’ as they say in Germanythe credits for the long lasting body go to Volkswagen but just as durable is the interior that was designed and built by Westfalia . Even after 30 years it shows no signs of aging and even the fridge and the heating system works as new. In fact the Van is like a Swiss Army knife ; you can pop up slide out , turn chairs and mount bikes or what ever you like on the backdoor or on the roof.and what if anything goes wrong? You may end up in a very special garage like this one in Split Croatia
So far the Van has driven 465.000 km – 11 times around the world (40.000km) or 15 times the Pan American Highway (30.000km) , 53 times the E40 ( 8778km from Calais to Kazachstan) , 24 times the route from Cape to Cape ( 20000km Norway to South Africa) and 1978 times the longest road in the Netherlands (A7. 235,1 km).
